Discover it Cash Back

A two-part bonus, added as of October 2026: a $200 statement credit after $500 of spend in the first 3 months, plus Discover's Cashback Match, which separately doubles all the cash back you earn in your first year with no cap (previously this card had no fixed bonus, just the match). There's no annual fee, and Discover approves thinner credit files than most issuers, making it a realistic first card.

The deal

Spend $500 in the first 3 months to earn a $200 statement credit, and Discover separately matches all cash back you earn in your first year

The walkthrough

  1. 01 Apply online and spend $500 on the card within the first 3 months to earn the $200 statement credit — Discover is one of the more accessible issuers for limited or new credit histories, a common starting point for newcomers and students.
  2. 02 The $200 credit posts to your statement within about two billing cycles after you clear the $500 spend.
  3. 03 Activate the 5% rotating bonus categories each quarter (groceries, gas, restaurants, etc.) to maximize what gets matched.
  4. 04 At your 12-month mark, Discover automatically doubles all the cash back you earned that year — on top of the $200 credit — with no redemption hoops.

What to watch for

  • ! Discover is accepted at fewer merchants than Visa/Mastercard, especially outside the US — keep a backup card for travel.
  • ! The 5% categories must be activated every quarter and are capped (typically $1,500 in spend per quarter).
  • ! The $200 statement credit is fixed once you clear $500 spend, but the Cashback Match on top still depends on how much you spend overall — light spenders see a small match.
  • ! You're not eligible for the $200 bonus if you've received a new-cardmember bonus on this card in the past 48 months.
  • ! Discover-branded cards, including this one, migrated to Capital One's website/app starting July 27, 2026 as part of the Capital One–Discover merger — account-access changes are ongoing, but new-cardholder terms remain unaffected.
