Chase Freedom Flex

$200 cash back after just $500 of spend in the first 3 months — one of the lowest hurdles in the no-annual-fee category. Beyond the bonus it earns 5% on rotating quarterly categories you must activate (up to $1,500/quarter), plus 5% on Chase Travel and 3% on dining and drugstores. The catch is Chase's 5/24 rule, which makes it a poor fit for newcomers early in their card journey.

The deal

Spend $500 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening

The walkthrough

  1. 01 Check your 5/24 status first — 5+ new cards (any issuer) in 24 months means near-automatic denial.
  2. 02 Apply on Chase.com and confirm the '$200 after $500 in 3 months' offer.
  3. 03 After approval, activate the current quarter's 5% categories, then put at least $500 of normal spending on the card.
  4. 04 Pay in full each month, and re-activate the 5% categories every new quarter.

What to watch for

  • ! Chase 5/24 sinks more Freedom Flex applications than the spend requirement ever will.
  • ! The 5% rotating categories aren't automatic — you must activate each quarter, capped at $1,500 in combined spend.
  • ! The cash back is technically Ultimate Rewards points; their top-end value depends on pooling with a premium Chase card.
